A Look Back on 2014

January is a great time to take a look back at the year that has come to an end and prepare for the months ahead. We sat down to brainstorm some of our favourite moments and events of the past year to share with all of you.

State-of-the-Art Fertilizer Plant in Nipawin

Construction of the Fertilizer Plant was completed late in 2013 calendar year, but this year saw the first season of use for the site. Located on Highway 35 South, the Fertilizer Plant boasts significantly faster loading speeds, high volume storage, and advanced fertilizer blending options.

Management Trainees and Employee Advancement

Our commitment to training and developing our team shone brightly in 2014. Employees at all levels of advancement participated in courses to develop their personal and professional lives. These courses focused on the multi-generational workforce, increasing productivity and effectiveness, loss prevention, and many other topics.

Pineland Co-op also acted as a host for two management trainees. Trent Schidlowsky, former Nipawin Food Store Manager, trained as a General Manager and accepted this role in Killarney, MB late in the year. Rylee Wallington has been training in the Nipawin Food Store to become a Food Store Manager. There are also numerous employees who have set their sights on careers within the Co-op System. We are committed to seeing them succeed and reaching their goals!

Ron Breader Wins the Saskatchewan Co-operative Merit Award

A long-serving Pineland Co-op board member and Co-op advocate, Ron Breadner, was honoured with the Saskatchewan Co-operative Merit Award. Join us in congratulating Ron on this outstanding achievement. We are so proud of Ron and the exemplary attitude he displays towards the values of co-ops.

Community Support and Sponsorships

The 2013-2014 fiscal year of Pineland Co-op saw donations and community support of $100,494 and numerous volunteer hours. We believe in being community-minded and seeing this belief brought to life through financial support and the investment of time and other resources is something that we take great pride in. A big “thank you” to our employees who volunteer their time on behalf of the Co-op and on their own time to further our community. Your efforts are so valuable!

Torch River Rail Expands in Choiceland

The Torch River Railway provides local farmers with access to markets all over North America and around the world. Pineland Co-op has been a proud partner in the advancement of the facilities for Torch River Rail. The expansion allows rail cars to be loaded more efficiently. Our Ag Team feels that this facility is of great benefit to the area and they are excited to see how it continues to grow!

Produce Truckload Sale Highlights Local Growers

Your Co-op is truly local. In that vein we have taken steps to be more conscious of where the products come from that we provide for your table. The Produce department in Nipawin set out to show consumers just how much of their produce was grown right here in Saskatchewan by hosting the Produce Truckload Sale this past Fall. Our Produce shelves feature items from 20 Saskatchewan growers thanks to partnerships with our wholesaler, Federated Co-op, as well as growers nearby in communities like Codette and Star City. There is not a season that goes by that we do not see some variety of local products in our store. Stop in and see what we have that is fresh for you today!

Co-operating with Diamond North Credit Union to Celebrate Co-operatives

Each year in October co-operatives around the globe celebrate Co-op Week. We chose to invite another co-operative in our community to celebrate with us this year. Members of our team and others from Diamond North Credit Union boarded a bus and made visits to our locations and branches in Nipawin, White Fox, and Choiceland. It was fantastic to learn something new at each stop and to deliver cupcakes to members and staff along the way. Cooper and Fat Cat also made appearances on Main Street and at the Food Store. We look forward to celebrating again next year in even bigger ways!
